Vinegar as a Stocking Filler

When it comes to buying Christmas presents, it isn’t an easy task, particularly when the present is for an adult who may already have everything.

Still, there’s a limit to how many pairs of socks you can get through in a lifetime, as well as how much body crème you can use before its perfume seems to have disappeared, so buying something original means you sometimes have to think outside the box.

And into the bottle.

For the older person who may be retired, or no longer has children at home, new ideas creep into one’s life and advanced cooking might just be one of those tried.  If experimenting has got past meat and three vegetables, why not treat that person-of-importance to a bottle of extremely special vinegar?  We’re not talking plain malt, white or red but those like balsamic or sherry vinegar that need time to grow old gracefully before being enjoyed.

You can pick up a bottle of balsamic vinegar in any supermarket and maybe the sherry variety too but a ‘real’ balsamic vinegar will have to come from a connoisseur and the price will be somewhat higher than the cheaper version.  The cheaper balsamic will be a mix of a strong vinegar, grape juice, sugar and caramel flavouring and yes, it tastes upmarket to a run-of-the-mill condiment but the real thing is to die for and to be used a drop at a time rather than poured onto the food.

However, you can make a magnificent glaze for meat or vegetables with a cup of balsamic vinegar, a tablespoonful of brown sugar and two tablespoons of honey! Boil the mixture to reduce it to fifty percent, add some olive oil and little bit of crushed garlic and black pepper, then give the meat or vegetables a treat of their very own!

One bottle of this expensive balsamic could still last a long time, so you might have to go back to the socks and bath time treats the following year.  However, if the balsamic went down a treat, you could always buy the luxury sherry one next ….. .
